Forestry Mulching in Granville, IL

Forestry Mulching around Granville

Granville is the largest village in Putnam County, which is the smallest county in Illinois by area. Putnam borders Bureau County, home of our yard in Ohio, and La Salle County, where Peru sits. The village and the rest of Putnam County are squarely in the area we work.

A forestry mulcher grinds brush, briars, honeysuckle, saplings and small trees where they stand. The ground-up wood stays on the soil as cover. There are no burn piles, no dumpsters and no trucks hauling brush off your land.

James runs the machine himself, so the person you talk to on the phone is the one who walks the ground with you. Call (815) 240-9065 or send photos through the contact form.

Local know-how

Forestry Mulching in Granville: what to know

Forestry mulching, not landscape mulch

People search for mulching services and mean two different things. One is a load of shredded bark for flower beds. The other is what we do: a tracked machine with a spinning drum of teeth that clears overgrown land.

The mulcher walks into growth a person cannot get through and leaves a layer of chips on undisturbed soil. That layer holds moisture and slows erosion on slopes. For the full picture, read what forestry mulching is and where it falls short.

When the ground needs clearing instead

Mulching takes growth down to the ground. It does not pull stumps or root systems. That is fine for trails, hunting ground, pasture edges and lots you want to walk and mow.

If a house, shop, driveway or pond is going on the site, the stumps and roots have to come out. That is land clearing, and it often runs straight into grading on the same visit. Tell us what the ground is for and we will match the method to it.

Working across Putnam County

Putnam County is small, so most of it is close to Granville. Illinois 71 and Illinois 89 meet in the village, and Hennepin, the county seat, sits on the Illinois River to the west. Its courthouse dates to 1837 and is the oldest in Illinois still used for its first purpose.

We work the whole county, from Hennepin and McNabb to Mark, Standard and Magnolia. Old farmsteads and long-idle lots can hide wire, metal and junk in the brush, so tell us what you know is in there before the machine arrives.

What moves the price, and how to get a number

Mulching is priced on the job in front of us. How thick the growth is, how big the stems are, slope, wet ground and how far the machine has to travel on site all change the time it takes. Our forestry mulching cost guide explains each one.

To get a real number, send a pin drop and a few photos, and tell us roughly how much ground you want opened. James will usually want to walk it. Then you get a quote built on your property. Start on our forestry mulching services page for how we work.

Is forestry mulching the same as the mulch sold for flower beds?

No. Forestry mulching is land clearing with a tracked machine that grinds brush and small trees where they stand. The chips it leaves are a byproduct, not a product delivered to your beds.

Do you work in Hennepin, McNabb and the rest of Putnam County?

Yes. All of Putnam County is in our service area, along with Bureau, La Salle and Marshall counties around it. Call with the location and we will set a time to look.

Can a mulcher clear sloped or wooded ground around Granville?

Usually, yes. A tracked mulcher works slopes a mower cannot, and it leaves the soil covered, which helps hold a hillside through the next heavy rain. Very steep or wet ground gets a look before we commit to a plan.

How soon can I use the ground after it is mulched?

Most people walk it within a day of the machine leaving. The chips settle and start to break down over the following seasons, and grass and ground cover come back through them.

Will the brush come back after mulching?

Some will, because the roots stay in the ground. Regrowth comes back as soft shoots that a mower or bush hog can keep down. Regular mowing stops it from closing in again.
