Pond Building around Mendota
We dig new ponds and clean out old ones in northern La Salle County. Farm ponds, stock ponds, fishing ponds and backyard ponds on acreage are all part of it.
James does the digging himself. When you call, you get the operator, not a call center.
Mendota already knows man-made water. The city has two of its own lakes, Lake Mendota and Lake Kakusha, used for fishing and boating. A private pond follows the same idea on a smaller scale.
Read the pond digging and renovation page for our approach, then call (815) 240-9065 about your ground. Clearing a grown-over site first is covered on our Mendota forestry mulching page.

What the job covers
- Walking the site and picking the pond location
- Digging and shaping the basin
- Dam and berm construction
- Overflow and spillway installation
- Cleaning out silted older ponds
- Bank shaping and finish grading around the water
Pond Building in Mendota: what to know
Where the water comes from
A pond needs a source. That might be runoff from the ground above it, a tile line, or both. Too little and the pond drops all summer. Too much and the overflow has to handle a lot.
Mendota Creek runs through town on its way south to the Little Vermilion River. Any site close to a creek gets extra care, because a pond and a flowing stream should be planned apart.
Who to call about rules
Inside city limits, start with the City of Mendota. Outside town, call the La Salle County zoning office. The La Salle County Soil and Water Conservation District in Ottawa can help with soils and siting.
A dam may bring in the Illinois DNR Office of Water Resources and its dam safety rules. A pond touching a stream or wetland may need the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Confirm before work starts. Our pond permit guide lists the questions to ask.
Getting a real number
Pond cost moves with size, depth, how far the dirt has to go, and whether there is clearing first. There is no honest flat price.
Send photos and the location and we will come look. The pond cost guide explains what drives the price.
Livestock and fishing ponds
A stock pond has to hold water late into summer and stand up to animals walking in and out. Gentle entry points and firm banks keep it from turning into a mud hole.
A fishing pond wants deeper water for winter and shallow edges for spawning. If you plan to stock it, the Illinois DNR has fisheries biologists who can advise once the pond is dug. Tell us the main use and we shape the basin for it.

Mendota pond building questions
Not seeing yours? Call or text (815) 240-9065 and ask James, or read the common questions.
Do you build ponds on farms around Mendota?
Yes. Farm and stock ponds in northern La Salle County are a big part of the pond work we do. Call with the location and we will plan a visit.
Can a pond near Mendota be fed by field tile?
A tile line can feed a pond on some sites. It depends on the tile, the ground and who else it drains. We look at it during the site walk.
Who handles pond rules outside Mendota city limits?
The La Salle County zoning office, plus the Illinois DNR Office of Water Resources if there is a dam. Confirm with them before digging.
How long does a new farm pond take to fill near Troy Grove or Earlville?
It depends on rain and the size of the ground draining into it. Some fill in one wet season, others take longer. We size the pond to its drainage area so it can fill and stay full.
Do you clean out old farm ponds in northern La Salle County?
Yes. We pull out silt, restore depth, and fix banks and overflows on older ponds.
