Land Grading & Yard Leveling in Rock Island, Illinois
Land grading is moving soil so ground sits at the right height and slope. In Rock Island, with its bluffs and river bottoms, that usually means getting water to go somewhere useful.

Grading around Rock Island
We grade yards, lots and acreage. That covers building pads, lawns that hold water, driveway approaches and slopes that wash. The tool is the same in each case: cut, fill, pack and check.
The city is the county seat and one of the three Illinois Quad Cities, alongside Moline and East Moline. We work the whole Illinois side and plan trips to group jobs together.
The ground ranges from flat river terrace to steep bluff. A lot near the Rock River and a lot up on the hill need very different grading plans.
James looks at the site, runs the machine and finishes the job himself. You talk to the same person the whole way through.

What the job covers
- Yard grading and lawn leveling
- Drainage grading to move water off a lot
- Building pads cut, filled and compacted
- Slopes reshaped so they stop washing
- Approach and parking area grading
- Finish grading with topsoil and seed
Grading in Rock Island: what to know
Bluffs, terraces and river ground
The city wraps around a lot of water. Arsenal Island sits in the Mississippi on one side, and the Black Hawk State Historic Site follows the Rock River on the other. In between, the ground climbs from river level up to the bluffs.
That means two common grading problems. Hillside lots shed water fast and wash out without a plan. Lower lots collect water and need a defined path to carry it off. We grade for whichever one you have.
Permits: city, county and state
Inside city limits, the City of Rock Island has required separate permits for grading and excavation work. Ask the city's building office what applies to your project before anything starts.
Near the rivers, floodplain rules matter. Rock Island County's floodplain development permit covers filling, grading and excavating. In a mapped floodway, the county says the Illinois DNR Office of Water Resources permit comes first. Confirm with each office for your address.
How a grading job runs
We start by finding out where the water wants to go. A laser level shows the real fall, which is often different from how it looks. Then we call JULIE so buried lines get marked.
Topsoil is stripped and saved. The ground beneath is cut and filled in layers and packed. Then the topsoil goes back, followed by seed and straw. Our yard grading and drainage guide covers each step in more detail.

Rock Island grading questions
Not seeing yours? Call or text (815) 240-9065 and ask James, or read the common questions.
Do I need a permit to grade my yard in Rock Island?
Possibly. The city has required separate permits for grading and excavation, and floodplain lots fall under county rules as well. Call the city's building office with your address and what you plan to do.
My lot is on a hillside near the bluffs. Can you stop it washing out?
Often, yes. Reshaping the slope and giving water a controlled path down it is the usual fix. Steep slopes may also need seed and erosion blanket to hold while grass takes.
Can you grade a building pad on Quad Cities acreage?
Yes. We strip topsoil, cut and fill to the right height, and compact the pad in layers. Your builder or engineer sets the elevation, and we grade to it.
How far ahead should I book grading in the Quad Cities?
Call as early as you can. Quad Cities work is planned and grouped with other jobs, and spring fills up quickly. Ring (815) 240-9065 or use the contact form with the address and a few photos.
