Pond Building in Sterling, IL

Pond Building around Sterling

We build new ponds and fix old ones. Farm ponds, livestock ponds, fishing ponds and ponds that are mostly about the view all come through here.

James runs the equipment himself, so the person who looks at your site is the one who digs it. That keeps the plan and the work in line.

The Whiteside County seat is Morrison, west of town. The USDA Service Center there houses the NRCS office, a good first call on soils and pond siting.

Our pond construction page covers the full process. For clearing the site first, see forestry mulching and land clearing in Sterling. To talk about a pond, call (815) 240-9065.

Pond Building in Sterling: what to know

Farm ponds on Whiteside County ground

Good farm ground is often flat, and a flat site changes how a pond gets built. With no natural bowl, more of the pond comes from digging down instead of damming a draw.

That means more dirt to move and place. We plan where the spoil goes before we start, so it ends up as useful ground instead of a pile.

Offices to call first

Inside city limits, check with the City of Sterling. Outside them, call the Whiteside County Building and Zoning department. The NRCS office at the USDA Service Center in Morrison can help with soils.

A pond with a dam may come under the Illinois DNR Office of Water Resources dam safety program. Work near a stream or wetland may need a look from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Confirm what applies before work starts.

Timing a pond build

Ponds dig cleanest when the ground is dry enough to carry the machines. Wet spring ground slows everything down and makes a mess of the site.

Plan the call well before you want water. A pond dug in a dry stretch still needs rain to fill, so expect it to take a season or more to reach full pool.

How deep, how big

Depth is what keeps a pond useful through a dry summer and a hard winter. Shallow ponds warm up, grow weeds and shrink. Too much size for the ground feeding it, and the pond never fills.

We size the pond to the drainage area and the job it has to do. Our pond depth guide explains the tradeoffs before you commit to a plan.

Do you dig ponds in Rock Falls as well as Sterling?

Yes. Sterling and Rock Falls are worked as one area, along with the farm ground around both towns.

Which Whiteside County office should I call about a pond?

Whiteside County Building and Zoning in Morrison for land outside city limits, and the City of Sterling inside them. Confirm with them before digging.

Can you build a pond on flat farm ground near Sterling?

Yes. On flat ground the pond is mostly dug down rather than dammed, and we plan where the dug soil goes before we start.

Can a pond be dug next to the house on acreage near Rock Falls?

Often, yes. A pond close to the house is mostly about the view, so shape and bank finish matter most. We also check that the overflow sends water away from the house, not toward it.

What should I send for a Whiteside County pond estimate?

A location, a few photos, and what you want the pond for. Call (815) 240-9065 or use the form and we will set up a visit.

How It Works

From First Call to Usable Ground

Call or Text

Call or text (815) 240-9065 or send the form. Roughly how many acres, what is growing and whether a truck and trailer can get in.

We Look at the Ground

James looks at the ground before he gives you a number, so the estimate fits the job in front of him.

The Work Gets Done

We agree on what comes out and what stays. Then the machines go to work, with James running them.

Ground You Can Use

You are left with ground you can walk, mow, build on or farm, and the topsoil stays where it belongs.
